Between him and me

When I need to forgive him

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!

Matthew 18:21-22

What my son said or did still hurts, Lord. I have carried it into quiet rooms, repeated it in my mind, and felt the wound open again. I am tired of giving this pain so much space, but I do not know how to lay it down all at once. Meet me here with the mercy I need.

Help me forgive him without calling wrong right or pretending the damage was small. Forgiveness does not erase wisdom, consequences, or necessary boundaries. Give me clarity about each of those, and keep them free from revenge. I do not want to punish him through silence, sharp words, or affection withheld until he has suffered enough.

When the memory returns, teach me not to rehearse the case against him. When anger rises, receive it before it becomes cruelty. Remind me how freely I have been forgiven through Christ, not to shame me for struggling, but to loosen my grip on what I am owed.

Father, begin in me what I cannot complete by willpower. I release the right to make this hurt the final word between us. If a truthful conversation is needed, prepare my heart to speak without accusation and to listen without surrendering what is true. Let forgiveness become a choice I make again when necessary, until resentment no longer governs my love for my son.
