When the news is bad

When he is in trouble

Out of the depths I cry to You, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice; let Your ears be attentive to my plea for mercy.

Psalm 130:1-2

Out of this depth I cry to You, Lord. My stomach is tight with dread, and every part of me wants to step between my son and what lies ahead. I want to explain, repair, persuade, and make the consequences disappear. I cannot do that, and I do not know how to stand still.

Hear my plea for mercy. Not only for an easier outcome, but for the deeper mercy my son needs. Bring truth into the open. Give him courage to face what is his to face, humility to receive help, and strength to take the next right step. Where he has caused harm, lead him toward honest repentance and repair. Where he has been judged unfairly, bring clarity and just counsel.

If he is alone behind a locked door, in a courtroom, or waiting for a decision, let him know that no place is beyond Your reach. Guard his mind from despair. Put wise and compassionate people near him. Keep shame from telling him that his worst moment is the whole truth about who he is.

And have mercy on me, Father. Restrain my urge to take over what belongs to him. Show me how to love him without excusing what must be faced. Let my words carry both truth and tenderness. I ask for rescue where rescue is good, but even more, I ask for mercy that changes what trouble alone cannot change.
